Sunday Sketch with Michelle

Hello.  Not only is it the last day of August, it is also time for another Sunday Sketch!  This week's sketch brings you an opportunity for including multiple pictures and lots of embellishments.

And here is my take on this sketch using products from the August Main, Embellishment, and PL Kits,:

Go Somewhere Lovely

I had originally printed out and planned on using three photos, but as I was laying them out I felt that all three together really overwhelmed my smaller sized layout (8.5x11), so I opted for going with one photo and filling the remaining photo space with a phrase cut from the Shimelle Paper Pad included in the August PL kit.

Go Somewhere Lovely 2

One of the great things about a sketch, is that they can be easily adapted to fit your needs and asthetics which is what I did. This time though, I still wanted to scrapbook the other photos I had eliminated from my layout because all of them together told a more complete story.

My solution for this, was to include a coordinating pocket page to go alongside it in the album.

Pocket Page

Pocket Life with Olya

Hello, hello!
Olya here, with my August pages. I have to say that I thought July's Pocket Life kit was pretty awesome and then Bam! here comes my August one and I just can't stop swooning over all the papers, colours and embellishments. Everything fits together so well, from patterned papers to buttons, from 3x4 filler cards to stickers. But enough of talking, let's look at what I actually created with those August CTK goodies.

This month my husband and I celebrated our 5th wedding anniversary. I wanted to create some kind of layout with our wedding photos and when I saw those 2x2 squares in Shimelle's new patterned paper, I knew I had to use them. I cut a 4x6 photo into 2x2 squares, placed them into pocket protectors, then filled the remaining open spots with papers. I added some embellishments on top of the page protectors because a) I didn't want to fuss with taking papers once they were in the page protectors and b) lately I've been enjoying seeing my embellishments on top of the photos, in a 3D sort of way :)
For the second wedding photo I just trimmed it, adhered to the cardstock that came with the kit and drew some lines and hearts around the photo. I completed the page with some gold accents from August PL add-on and the main August PL kit. Once again, I love how all the embellishments just flow together, making it easy for us, scrapbookers, to put a layout in a pinch.
And here is my 12x12 spread from the everyday Project Life album.

That stamp phrase was perfect for our Jenga night, with game pieces flying in all directions when the tower finally breaks.
Again, look at those stickers and the pretty 6x6 paper in Shimelle's new line. Two words: IN LOVE.
Another love worthy embellishment is this month's wood veneers. I just adore those circle, pie-chart looking veneers. I added some colors to them with my gel pens, let them dry and attached to the paper using little glue dots.
My second 12x12 spread is again full of Shimelle's patterned papers, and embellishments from the August PL kits and add-on.

Summer Mini Album

Hello and happy Thursday! It's Kasia here today with a mini album made using the August main kit and embellishment add on kit. I wanted to try something new so instead of making album on my usual base- connected with a metal wire or binding rings- I decided to make a foldable mini book.

mini kasia 3

Inside I used photos from our short holiday in Marmaris- they are so cheerful and bring many good memories. They are all square size, all taken with my iPhone and processed with Instagram. It really couldn't get easier:)

Hello! Lucia here today with my second blog post - and second video - for CTK!
I'm creating a page about sunset - my favourite part of the day when I'm on the beach! The photo I've used is from my mini (just 4 days!!) holiday in Sardinia, Italy this month.
I was working with the BEAUTIFUL All That Glitters August 2014 Main Kit and added some white (of course :) ) llike tissue paper, copy paper and white thread and some black ink.

Double Page Layout with Michelle Wedertz

Lately I have found that trying new page sizes, techniques, and styles has breathed fresh life into my creativity.  A two page layout seems the perfect next avenue to explore.

When trying something new, I often take inspiration from scrapbooking galleries and pinterest, Double page sightings are rare though. I am certainly seeing more than usual, but there still is not a great deal to pull from.  So when I set out to design a two page layout, I really had to start from scratch.

I started first by narrowing down a color scheme.  Beside complimenting or highlighting photos, color can be used to unite multiple pages.  These are the products I pulled from the various August kits.

Double Page 5

From this I narrowed my color scheme down even further to pink, red, gold, and a few neutral pieces in beige and gray.

Next, I spread my photos across the two pages and played around with the arrangement.  To keep it simple, I printed all but one of my photos the same size and went for a symetrical design to balance the photos on both sides. Here is what I decided on:

Double Page

Now that I knew where I wanted my photos to go, I began to build a background.  Since I absolutely loved the red patterned paper from the August Main Kit, I decided to be bold and use it as one full side of my design.  I then cut a smaller pink rectangle to spread across both pages, bridging the two pages.

Double Page 2

To coninue with the process of unifying my layout, I cut a border strip in a neutral beige from the 6x6 paper pad included in the PL Kit and placed it across the top of both pages, making sure they lined up.

Double Page 4

With the foundation of the layout completed, I turned next to embellishing. To make sure I balanced them across the two pages, I used the embelllishment to create a visual triangle.  You can see that here in the finished layout.

Tuedsay Tutorial with our Guest Designer Emily

Hi there!  August guest designer Emily
{ http://justem.typepad.com/scrapbookery/} here with a tutorial for a quick and easy layout.  This layout really evolved from the planning process to the final product. I created my entire layout based around the cute little “pretty things” wood veneer arrow that came with the main All the Glitters kit.  I love the font on the arrow, and I thought I had the perfect pictures to use. I originally planned a layout with four square photos of some great vintage items at a local event I attended.  They were definitely ”pretty things.” I hadn’t used any of the pink elements in the kit yet, so I also wanted to be sure this layout included some pink. I thought perhaps pink, orange, and aqua would work well together. However, as you will see, my final layout does not use these colors or have four photos. Nor did I even end up using the photos I had originally intended!  Once I started creating the layout went  in a totally different direction.

My first step was cutting down my 12x12 patterned paper to 8.5x11, since that is the size that I scrap.  I often put strips on the edges of my paper, so I found a few and tried them out. The pink stripe was actually a strip from the edge of one of the Shimelle papers.

I ended up using these papers, and I added some gold star vellum at the top.  At this point, I realized that my color scheme was going to be orange, pink, and gold…forget the blue!  I started pulling out all of the pink and orange elements I could find from the ephemera packs (both the Crate Paper pack in the main kit and the Heidi Swapp pack in the Seaside Adventure add-on kit) and placed them haphazardly on my page. I thought I could choose a few to use, and I wanted to see all my choices spread out.

After I saw all the little bits on my layout, I realized that I really liked how they all looked together. At this point, I completely scrapped my idea (pun somewhat intended!!) to use four photos and decided that one would be sufficient. I decided I would place it on top of the large pink tag.  Sometimes I make a layout with the photos in mind…and sometimes, like this time, I have a creative idea, and the photos are the last thing I add!! I rearranged my die cuts one final time before sticking them down, although, the final layout looks different than this, because I continued moving and changing things as I went along.

I used all the die cuts, added some stickers and enamel dots, and finally added my photo. I ultimately chose a picture of my daughter in her dance recital costume.  The pink matched my feminine layout, and, quite frankly, she is the ultimate “pretty thing,” in my book!   I used the stamps from the main kit and the Weather Advisory stamp to add some text to my layout. I also placed a strip of journaling along the bottom.

Here is the final product. I ended up not using a large title, but there are so many little sentiments on the layout, that I think it’s okay not to have a definite title. My final layout looks pretty much nothing like I’d envisioned at the beginning, but that is okay!  The entire thing took me about an hour to finish. While it is a pretty busy layout, it was actually quite quick and simple to create.

The process of creating this layout reminded me that it’s okay to abandon your plans and go with the flow. Who knows, the results may be even better than your original idea!
